BP-08 · ILLUSTRATIVE SCENARIO
Controlled BOM revisions and true job costs
A small manufacturer plans in spreadsheets. Bills of materials are edited in place, and job costs are estimated from memory.
This is an illustrative scenario written by SALES TEC to show our approach. It is not a description of a real client, and it contains no results.
§ 01The problem
Teams build from different revisions, shortages surface after release, and actual cost differs from quoted cost by an unknown amount.
§ 02How we would approach it
- 01Model multi-level BOMs with revisions, effectivity dates and approval of engineering changes.
- 02Release work orders only after a material availability check, and show shortages before release.
- 03Capture issued material, labor time and scrap at each operation on tablets or scanners.
- 04Roll actual against standard cost by job and show variances with reasons.
§ 03How we would measure success
Measures of success
- Jobs started with a shortage
- Gap between quoted and actual cost
- Jobs built on a superseded revision
- Time to answer a due-date question
