BP-03 · ILLUSTRATIVE SCENARIO

Container milestones, last free day and landed cost

An importer receives containers from several suppliers through different forwarders. Documents and status arrive by email, and cost is finalized weeks after the goods are on the shelf.

This is an illustrative scenario written by SALES TEC to show our approach. It is not a description of a real client, and it contains no results.

§ 01The problem

Late containers are found out when a customer asks. Demurrage and detention accrue unnoticed, and product margins are set on estimated freight and duty.

§ 02How we would approach it
  1. 01Give every shipment one record linking the PO, the shipment, the container and the items, with its documents and partner contacts.
  2. 02Pull status through carrier APIs, tracking aggregators or EDI status messages where available, and capture the rest by short forms.
  3. 03Show last free day and warn the buyer and the forwarder before per-diem charges start.
  4. 04Receive items at an estimated landed cost, allocate freight, duty, fees and brokerage by value, weight or volume as invoices arrive, and true up item cost and margin.
§ 03How we would measure success

Measures of success

  • Containers with a known status at any moment
  • Demurrage and detention charges
  • Gap between estimated and final landed cost
  • Time to find a document during a claim
